MEET THE LEGEND: Breanna Knights

Designer Breanna Knights is nurturing self-expression through her one of a kind custom apparel

Upcoming designer Breanna Knights stays busy with her many entrepreneurial pursuits. Having recently graduated with her bachelors in fashion design and merchandising, she's now focused on building her budding custom apparel brand, being a visual merchandiser at Forever 21, and promoting herself as a hair stylist. Knights has a full plate to say the least, and we were fortunate enough to get an inside scoop on how she got started, manages it all, and some general words of wisdom along the way.

Q: Who are you and how would you describe what you do?

A: "My name is Breanna Nicola Knights and I design and create women and menswear."

Q: How and when did you get started?

A: "At the age of 8 my father taught me how to sew by hand for my dolls. I used to cut up every bed sheet in the house. In high school I got my hands on my own sewing machine and we’ve been inseparable since."

Q: How would you describe your style/ technique & how has it evolved?

A: "I would describe my style as eclectic. One day I may feel really feminine and classy, influencing the garment I’d be creating at that moment. Other times I may be more into the grunge, streetwear style. I love incorporating my edgy personality into my garments as well, whether it’d be darker colors or rough textures. Over the years I’ve grown a huge appreciation for menswear, even for myself to rock. My skills with sewing and design have evolved and increased since adding menswear to my list of design categories. "

Q: What keeps you motivated?

A: "There are days when I feel creatively stifled. Looking back at the positive feedback on previous pieces I created motivates me to complete my ideas and to be confident in what I decide to create."

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What are your plans for the future?

A: "In 5 years I see myself continuing to build a web-based brand. I also see possibilities of selling my garments in small boutiques and global awareness of my brand. I see myself relocating and networking with investors who are willing to help bring my dream to life with having my own storefront."

Q: What do you think the secret to success is?

A: "The secret to success is risk. Having full faith in your craft and your ability to meet your target market’s needs. You must also be consistent in your work ethic. I believe you must invest enough time into your craft to develop a remarkable ability to perform the task. Lastly, no talent is successful without strategy. Goals provide structure to you life, but planning gives you direction."

Q: Any words of wisdom/ anything you wanted to let people know?

A: "If you have a skill, nurture it. Show off what you can do. Promotion to the right audience creates a need and a demand. If you can profit off of your skill, why not start your own business? It all starts with believing in yourself. Always believe in yourself!"
