610 photographer Tristan Brodsky gives us a glimpse into his life
Lehigh Valley creative Tristan Brodsky's eclectic photography
Easton based freelance photographer Tristan Brodsky has grown as a creative over the years. From shooting cars to landscapes to models, Tristan shows us that following your passion is all you need to succeed. “I specialize in portraiture and cityscape photography.” Tristan explained, “My goal is to one day work as a personal photographer for one of my favorite musicians or work alongside a brand that I admire.”
Tristan’s humble beginnings started with an iPhone his junior year of high school, “I would edit the photos with VSCO and post them to Instagram.” he recalled. “I really enjoyed being able to manipulate the look of my photos by adjusting the colors, exposure, etc.” After using a friend’s DSLR a few times he ended up getting one for himself senior year. “At first I just wanted to take photos of my friend’s cars and ones from car shows. From there I started exploring abandoned places with some friends and brought my camera along. This sparked my “urbex” (urban exploring) hobby.”
“I’m currently shooting with a Canon 6D, 24-105mm L series, Sigma art 35mm 1.4, and a Rokinon 14mm 2.8. I mainly try to use natural light but as I branch out more I’m enjoying learning more about lighting.” Though he has some quality gear now, Brodsky believes that what you use isn’t as important as “your vision and ability to edit.” Some advice he gives to aspiring photographers is to, “buy a cheap camera body and lens. Understanding how a camera works and how to use light to your advantage are the most important things in my eyes. Then within Lightroom you can play around with editing to find yourself your own style. It's cliche but practice makes perfect with photography.”
After his recent purchase of the Sigma 35mm, Brodsky started doing more portraiture work. “Looking at photography from a career standpoint I wanted to show people viewing my work I can do it all,” something he has definitely proven. “My goal was to meet and befriend some people who would be willing to get in front of the camera to help me bring my visions to life. Over the past few months I’ve been lucky enough to do just that. Shooting portraits has taught me a lot of useful new things. I’m learning to be more conscious of my compositions and use light to my advantage.”
In addition to portraits and landscapes, Tristan has become increasingly interested in “Concert photography and promotional work. I've been lucky enough to shoot a few concerts for some artists that I really enjoy such as Chris Travis, Xavier Wulf, Bill Saber, Out Came the Wolves, and The Word Alive. Shooting concerts is an exhilarating experience. Seeing the crowds energy towards their favorite artist is so cool to watch and I love being able to capture those moments.”
As far as inspirations go Tristan revealed, “I’ve always drawn from music that I listen to, (but) I think most of my inspiration comes from other photographers that I like and most of all my friends.” Tristan added, “I feel it's important to surround yourself with like minded individuals that inspire you and push you to better yourself. My friends are some of the most talented hard working individuals I know and I really mean that.”
“Once I found photography I loved it so much right away, though I didn’t immediately know it was what I wanted to do forever, I know now. Everything changed for me when I picked up a camera, I feel like I found my identity. I love being able to express my feelings and my style throughout my own work.”
